Solar Flare on Sept.9, 2011
Upon returning home from work today, I was not shocked to see that we had ad a power failure. They happen all the time here and are usually short lived. The wife told me what time and for how long and when I opened my email, I had a notice that there was a solar flare this morning that generated a level 2 geomagnetic storm. The time and duration of the flare coincided perfectly to the timing of the power outage. Still think solar flares aren't a concern? This was a short lived and relatively weak flare, that caused little damage to the grid, however, larger storms are being predicted in the next 1-2 years. I think this is something to keep an eye on.
